Places of pilgrimage in the Turkish town of Demre

gulet yacht charter,

Some people believe that Santa Claus did not exist but truth is that old Father Christmas did in fact exist as a historic personality. He did not come from beyond the North Pole where Reindeers roam, but lived under the warm Lycian sun as Bishop of Myra. His church and ex-tomb continue to exist as places of pilgrimage in the Turkish town of Demre (known also as Kale, near Antalya).

Saint Nicholas was born in Patara, was elected bishop during Diocletian’s persecutions, and died in Myra around the year 350. This stories of his charitable acts took on legendary dimensions during the following centuries.

One of these stories concerned three boys who were hacked into pieces by a greedy butcher, who salted and pickled them for sale in his shop. Nicholas miraculously restored the boys to life. On another occasion, on hearing that the daughters of a poor Myran could not marry for lack of a dowry, Nicholas stole under the man’s window at night and left a bag of gold for each girl. This act earned him the reputation of secretly delivering gifts in the black of night.

The Dalyan Region

Dalyan Region

Located in the province of Mugla and possessing one of the most special gifts of nature and history, Köycegiz stands beside the same named lake at the tip of which touches the Mediterranean. Now a nature and wild life preserve, this site is home to many species of birds and is a real paradise with its rare and beautiful setting, and with a history going back to 3500 BC. It is possible to cruise over the natural labyrinth-like channel walled with reeds, that link the sea and the Lake of Köycegiz, which is described as “smooth as glass” till noon and suitable for wind-surfing in the afternoon.

The lake contains almost every kind of seafood including carp and crab. Dalyan can be reached at the end of a road decorated with scented frankincense trees. The Dalyan Delta is a unique site, lying peacefully with its 4 kilometers-long golden beach. Sea turtles of Loggerhead Caretta Caretta and blue crabs live here making the area more attractive. The beaches where these sea turtles nestle can be reached by a boat ride from Dalyan town, passing through beds of bulrushes and pampas grass in the river.

On the other side of the channel is the marvelous view of the ancient city of Caunos, which was situated on the border between Caria and Lycia and was an important sea-port. The site can be reached by boat or on foot. The first sight here is the fascinating tombs carved into the rock and overlooking the waterway. Also of interest in this district is the acropolis lying a little inland, together with a Roman temple, antique theater, agora, Ibrab and Susandaa castles.

The Dalyan region is not the last site in Köycegiz to offer natural beauty. The Gulf of Göcek, with its many bays facing numerous islets is another spot. Holding a lovely marina, it constitutes a perfect center for sailing, and there are also ruins of the ancient city of Arymaxa, furnishing a different scenery. You can also take a mud bath on the bank of the river, its’ rich minerals such as calcium and magnesium which are beneficial for the skin.

We just returned from what can only be described as the most relaxing

9

We just returned from what can only be described as the most relaxing 8 days of our lives on the first ever TurkYacht charter gullet sailing holiday. Not only was it our first TurkYacht cruise but it was also our first travel adventure to Turkey and Greece as well. And what better way to relax than on a traditional Turkish sailing gullet, otherwise known as Karizma! For 8 days and 7 nights we cruised the beautiful and refreshing crystal clear waters in the Mediterranean Sea off the southern shores of Turkey and Greek islands with 14 other lucky passengers.

Some of TurkYacht’s sailing routes include bases of Marmaris, Gocek, and Fethiye. Unlike many island-based sailing in the Mediterranean, a holiday in this southern area of the Aegean primarily involves cruising the many bays, gulfs and inlets of mainland Turkey. Surrounding the coast are massive mountain ranges dropping sheer into azure seas, carving the shore into a procession of tiny coves, hidden bays, and pristine beaches. Hillsides forming a vista from your yacht are covered in pine and olives trees and the ruins of countless ancient cities; Greek, Roman, and Byzantine cram the coast, limiting development to a few isolated areas. The incredible combination of historical sites and wonders, beautiful sailing and superb swimming that make this coastline a truly fantastic destination.Turkey isn’t short of a nightspot either with the resorts of Marmaris, Fethiye and Gocek all standing out with their array of bars and nightclubs. Come here to drink, dance and be merry!

From Turkey we sailed west towards the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Kalimnos and Leros. Rhodes still has much to offer sailors with its splendid medieval capital city, also named Rhodes, and several smaller coastal villages that retain their authentic appeal . Kos is the starting port for sailing in the Northern Dodecanese. A touristy island, Kos highlights the benefits of a sailing holiday, where you can visit the bars, restaurants and churches and mosques of Kos town and then set out for the less populated islands of Kalymnos, Leros and Patmos. By day, if we were not sunning ourselves on the deck of the boats then we would be exploring the cultural offerings that Greece has in abundance. Whether it was the ruins of the towns or the old Castles and forts overlooking the small villages.

Luckily the evenings were just as good, if not better. Hours were spent sitting onboard the gullet with a beer or a wine in hand watching as the sky changed from royal blue into amazing reds, oranges and yellows as the sun set on each glorious day. Unfortunately like all good things it had to come to an end, and we finished our holiday back on mainland Turkey.
